There are many things that you need to know about planning a northern Ontario fishing trip.

We are Map E Division 22. There are exceptions to some of these rules for the Walleye and Muskie fishing for the Winnipeg River. Please refer to page 82 on the above link for these exceptions.

2. Frequently Asked Questions

If I forget to bring my medication can I get it replaced in Canada?

This is not easily done and may involve a doctor or emergency room visit. Our advice is to pack any medication that you may need in your carry-on baggage and keep your eyes on it. It is much easier to replace clothing or fishing tackle than medication.

a. What are the best types of fishing lures to use?

Sm.Mouth Bass: spinners, top water lures, ounce jigs w/twister tails. Walleye: 3/8-ounce jigs w/twister tails, crank bait, jig and a minnow. Northern: spoons, bucktails, shad raps, trolling lures Trout: ultralite lures, ultralite spoons, 3 way swivels. Muskie: perch coloured ernies, grey eagle tails ,black & chartruse buchertails

b. What do I need to bring?

If you are on the American Plan, the only things you need to bring are your personal items, suitable clothing and fishing gear. If you want some snacks, than you can bring that as well.

If you are on the Housekeeping Plan, you are to bring all of your own food. Cooking utensils, fridge, stove, microwave, pots and pans and BBQ’s are at the cabins. You also require your personal items, suitable clothing and fishing gear.

c. What ID do I need to get into Canada?

Currently, to cross the border into Canada, Customs Officers will want to see a piece of photo ID AS WELL AS proof of citizenship, for example a birth certificate, passport, or green card.
In the near future, passports will be required for travel to and from the U.S.A. Information on U.S. citizen passport requirements can be found at the U.S. Department of State. Below are the timelines for passport requirements, taken from www.state.gov/travel/. If you are a frequent traveller, it is probably not a bad idea to get your passport soon to avoid any rushes or delays.
December 31, 2006 – Passport or other accepted document required for all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada.
December 31, 2007 – Passport or other accepted document required for all air, sea and land border crossings.
Minor children travelling without their parents or only one parent must have a notarized letter of consent to travel into Canada.

d. Where can I stay in Kenora if I need to get a hotel?

e. How early can I arrive at Bayview Lodge?

Unless previous arrangements have been made, we ask you to please respect our arrival time of 1:00pm. We do this in order to facilitate having your cabin cleaned thoroughly. Any early arrivals are subject to an extra day charge.

f. How bad are the bugs in the summer?

The bug situation in the summer really depends on what type of spring we get and past weather. Some years the bugs are not at all a problem, while other years they are a bit worse, especially as the sun goes down. If you are concerned, we suggest bringing a good bug spray and perhaps a long sleeve shirt and pants. g. What phone number should I leave in case of an emergency ?

h. Can I purchase gas for my boat at your lodge?

We do not sell gas at our lodge, the gas we have is for our boat rental packages. You can purchase gas at the Minaki Marina nearby.
